Ellen Toomey was drawn to this work by a bauhausian notion that good design can make the world a better place. Experience endorses this belief, along with an understanding that apparent limitations stimulate creativity. Ellen delights in collaborative process with clients, the alchemy of craft and technology, intellect and artistry.
Born on the east coast, raised on the west, trained in elementary years by progressive nuns to diagram sentences, Ellen’s education was completed with rigorous design training at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York (where she discovered a tremendous affinity for letterforms).
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communications Design, with honors, Pratt Institute, 1979 Participant in invitational alumni show and panel, 1992
Instructor of Design at University of California, Berkeley, 1987–1993 Introduction to Design, Publication Design, and Typography, extension program.
Ellen is a long time practitioner and sometimes teacher of yoga.
